Planning begins with consideration of each student’s prior knowledge, interests and concerns, aspirations and needs, and gifts and talents. This provides a basis for motivating and engaging students in learning, and targeting teaching to maximise each student’s achievement. Each student is working towards a specific, individualised goals. Some students may continue to learn and consolidate concepts from a particular level over several years, and importance is placed on planning to ensure students have the opportunity to learn and practice their skills in a range of contexts. Each student has an Individual Curriculum Plan (ICP) or Highly Individualised Curriculum Plan (HICP) for each learning area linked to the Australian Curriculum, individual learning goals for English and Maths, as well as curriculum access goals identified in their Individual Student Support Plan (ISSP) and Highly Individualised Curriculum Plan (HICP). Student goals are displayed in the classrooms and progress is noted weekly.
